Is your Shark Navigator too hard to push on thick carpet? Learn how to use the suction control collar to adjust power and save your back.
One of the most common complaints from seniors using the Shark Navigator Lift-Away is that the vacuum feels “too heavy” or looks like it’s “sucking up the whole rug.”
Is your Shark Navigator too hard to push on thick carpet? Learn how to use the suction control collar to adjust power and save your back.
- Symptoms: Vacuum feels glued to the floor, Cannot push on high-pile carpet, Lifting up area rugs, Motor sounds strained
- Tools: none
- Difficulty: Easy
The good news is that your vacuum isn’t broken—it’s actually too good at its job. The Navigator has such powerful suction that it can create a seal against the floor, making it nearly impossible to push. To fix this, you just need to find the Suction Control Collar.

Where is the Suction Control?
On almost all Shark Navigator models (like the NV352 or NV360), the suction control is a silver or grey rotating ring located right below the handle where the hose connects to the wand.
How to Adjust for Different Floors
1. For Hardwood and Tile (MAX Suction)
- Setting: Close the collar completely.
- Why: On hard floors, you want 100% of the air focused on picking up crumbs and dust from the cracks. You won’t feel any resistance because the floor nozzle has small wheels to keep it moving.
2. For Standard Carpet (MEDIUM Suction)
- Setting: Rotate the collar halfway open.
- Why: This allows a small amount of air to escape from the handle, “breaking” the seal with the carpet. It makes the vacuum glide much smoother without sacrificing deep cleaning.
3. For High-Pile or Shag Rugs (MIN Suction)
- Setting: Rotate the collar until it is Full Open.
- Why: If your vacuum feels “glued” to the carpet or the motor sounds like it’s screaming (high-pitched), you need maximum air release. Opening the collar fully makes the machine significantly lighter to push.
Problems Solved by Suction Control
”It’s Eating My Area Rugs!”
Lightweight or fringed area rugs are often sucked into the brush roll. Instead of struggling, open the suction collar all the way and move the vacuum quickly. This reduces the “lifting” force on the rug.
”I Have Back Pain While Vacuuming”
If you find yourself using your whole body weight just to move the vacuum forward, your suction is too high for that specific carpet. Open the collar until you can push the vacuum with one hand.
”The Motor is Making a Whistling Sound”
When the suction is set to MAX on a very thick carpet, the motor starves for air. This triggers a safety bypass which can sound like a whistle. Opening the collar slightly will stop the noise and prevent the motor from overheating.
IMPORTANT: Some newer Shark models (like the Navigator ZU series) have a Sliding Switch on the handle instead of a rotating collar. The logic remains the same: “Minus (-)” for carpet, “Plus (+)” for hard floors.
| Problem | Recommended Fix |
